*About Vernon Jojola:

Silversmith Vernon Jojola of Isleta Pueblo began his artistic endeavors with pottery, but "Something inside pulled me to jewelry and Bert (Vernon's wife) encouraged me to go ahead." In addition to encouraging Vernon, Bert helps him with some of the paper design and stone selection for his unique creations.

Completely self-taught, Vernon believes that his talent "is a gift presented to me by a higher power." This philosophy has led Vernon to create one of a kind works in silver overlay, but with a special approach. His designs are a positive picture instead of a negative-a picture in silver. He has long been intrigued by the Mimbres style and likes to work with these designs because "they are simple, clean and pretty--they stand out."

His work has won first, second and third places at the Santa Fe Indian Market, first and second places at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center and many other awards in juried competitions across the Southwest, and samples of his work are included in the permanent collections of several museums.
